Deniz Kandiyoti is Professor of Development Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. She holds degrees from the Université de Paris (Sorbonne) and the London School of Economics and Political Science (MSc and PhD) and has taught, amongst others, at Middle East Technical University in Ankara (1969—1974) and at Boğaziçi Üniversitesi (1974—1980) in Istanbul.
Deniz Kandiyoti is the author of Concubines, Sisters and Citizens: Identities and Social Transformation (in Turkish, 1997), editor of Fragments of Culture: The Everyday of Modern Turkey (2002), Gendering the Middle East (1996), Women, Islam and the State (1991), editor-in-chief of Central Asian Survey and author of numerous articles on gender, Islam, development and state politics.
