This event is part of the Arabic film series “Beyond Spring”, organized by Mayadin Al-Tahrir e.V., EUME and the Werkstatt der Kulturen.

Synopsis:
Using an artistic combination of documentary footage, archive images, animation scenes, animated characters representing the family members of the filmmaker, and his own voice-over, the director tells the story of himself and of his generation, born with the birth of Mubarak's rule in the early 80s of last century, and of his forgotten home city, Suez, the famous city of the Suez canal that triggered the revolution to the extent of becoming known as “The flame of the Egyptian revolution”.

Amro Ali is a PhD scholar at the University of Sydney, an associate of the Sydney Democracy Network, and is currently a visiting scholar at the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung, based within the Global Governance unit. His doctoral research examines Egypt’s second city of Alexandria as a political laboratory in how civil society and activists attempt to keep the revolutionary trajectory and the promise of politics alive in the face of an authoritarian resurgence. Amro writes for Mada Masr, Open Democracy, Guardian, Atlantic Council, Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy. He also blogs at amroali.com and administrates the Facebook group Alexandria Scholars. He has recently written for two edited books: Mediating the Arab Uprisings, and Wired Citizenship: Youth Learning and Activism in the Middle East.
