Cities Compared: Governance, Participation and Diversity

Cities Compared: Governance, Participation and Diversity

Directors: Ulrike Freitag and Nora Lafi (Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient)

Cities Compared is associated with the Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient.

Concept and objective of the program is to bring together research on cosmopolitanism in order to compare cities of different regions bordering on the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, from various disciplinary perspectives, from history to political sciences or political philosophy. A focus will always be the city. The aim is to confront theories of cosmopolitanism and civil society with concrete historical urban case studies in a comparative way. Thus the attempt will be made to push forward the theoretical discussion of the concepts beyond Eurocentrism and at the same time to connect recent research on Mediterranean cities to ongoing theoretical debates.
