The Arab-German Thought Initiative: Preparatory Meeting

Convened by Islam Dayeh (Freie Universität Berlin)

Forum Transregionale Studien, Wallotstr. 14, 14193 Berlin

The “The Arab-German Thought Initiative” is a series of three workshops that seeks to explore the potential of Arab-German thought today. The initiative comes as a response to the growing Arab presence in the German public today, and the limited spaces in academia and beyond for critique, in the proper meaning of the word. What does it mean to engage the German public discourse in Arabic through Arab epistemologies and Arab political culture from the German public sphere? How can an invitation to dialectical thinking change our assumptions about the self and the other, and about our relationship to critique and our sense of responsibility and representation?
The initiative aims to bring together like-minded scholars who have been actively working within what might be called the Arab-German thought space (“Denkraum”), but perhaps on the margins of public and academic life. We would like to encourage the participating scholars to think out loud and reflect on the potential of new intellectual and political imaginations in and through the German-Arabic thought-space.

Please note that this is a closed workshop.
