Reading and Translating Hebrew in Cairo: A Personal Experience

Nael Eltoukhy is an Egyptian novelist, essayist, journalist and translator of Hebrew literature into Arabic, who currently lives in Berlin. He has published two novellas and three novels in Arabic. His Arabic translation of the Hebrew book Rachel and Ezezkiel by Almog Behar was published in 2016. The English translation of his second novel, Women of Karantina (AUC Press, 2014), was longlisted for the fiction prize of the 2015 FT/ Oppenheimer Funds Emerging Voices Awards. His most recent novel, Out of the Gutter, was published in Arabic in 2018.
Irad Ben Isaak is a Doctoral Researcher at the Selma Stern Center for Jewish Studies Berlin-Brandenburg and at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt-Oder. His dissertation project explores the genre of Bildungsroman in modern Yiddish literature. He studies the works of Mendele Mocher Sforim, Yehoshua Perle, or Dovid Bergelson, and inquires about processes of cultural transfer between European literatures. He holds an MA in Yiddish Literature from Tel Aviv University. His MA thesis examined the figure of the Yiddish poet and cultural activist Melech Ravitch, focusing on his vegetarian poetry and ideology. Irad Ben Isaak's research interests include Yiddish, Hebrew and European literatures, Gender and Masculinity Studies, and Cultural Studies.
