At the beginning of the academic year 2004/5 this afternoon workshop will bring together the five AKMI fellows working on Ottoman merchant cities with interested scholars from Berlin to discuss new approaches to the study of merchant cities in the Eastern Mediterranean. The workshop is primarily devoted to a presentation and discussion of individual research projects.

The workshop is of an entirely informal nature and designed to allow free and critical discussion rather than to present results. Thus, questions of sources and methodology should take precedence over the presentation of historical detail. The workshop is part of the project ‘New Approaches to the Study of Merchant Cities in the ottoman Empire”. It will consist of 2 panels, 6 presentations of ca. 15 Minutes, and a round-table discussion.

Participants will come from the active institutions.
