Crisis and Memory

AKMI Summer Academy

Deutsches Orient-Institut Beirut, Lebanon

Convenor: Prof. Dr. Angelika Neuwirth (Freie Universität Berlin)

Under the working title of the Summer Academy 1998, “Crisis and Memory”, the historical treatment of crises within the Muslim world in literary, oral or visual traditions were discussed in relation to its relevance to modernity. Interest was focused upon mechanisms used to deal with crises, their preservation in various symbol systems and communications media and their re-emergence in contemporary contexts. The exploration of questions on Islamic civilisation included its interaction with other cultural traditions. The Summer Academy therefore accepted approaches to the subject from all geographical regions of the Muslim world. A further aim was to explore the relevance of studies on the Islamic world for research fields other than Islamic studies.
