“The Prison Narratives of Assad’s Syria: Voices, Texts, Publics” (SYRASP) is a research project at the Forum, funded by the European Research Council (Grant Agreement No. 851393), and an affiliate project of the research program Europe in the Middle East – The Middle East in Europe (EUME) at the Forum. Bridging the disciplines of literary studies and cultural anthropology, SYRASP researches contemporary narratives, images, social media practices, and cultural practices related to incarceration and forced disappearance in Syria under the Assad regime (1970-present). The research is directed by Principal Investigator Dr. Anne-Marie McManus.

The student assistant’s tasks are to support the project and its PI, including the following main tasks:

• Gathering of literature and media materials, and the compilation of annotated bibliographies
• Transliteration and transcription of Arabic texts and audio recordings
• General office duties and travel organization
• Preparation and organization of events

Requirements:

• Student in the Humanities, Social Sciences or Area Studies, preferably with a focus on the Middle East (especially Syria) and an interest in the thematic focus of the project
• Strong organizational skills (proven e.g. by student employment, volunteer work)
• Fluency in English and Arabic (verbal and written); Syrian dialect and French language skills are advantageous
• Competency in handling common office software
• Independent and reliable working method

In order to be employed, candidates must be enrolled at a university or college. Working conditions and salary are based on the Labour Agreement for Student Employees (Tarifvertrag für studentische Beschäftigte) as of January 1, 2003 (TV Stud II) and on the Minimum Wage Law of the State of Berlin (Landesmindestlohngesetz) in its currently valid version.
