Europe in the Middle East—the Middle East in Europe (EUME) is a multi-disciplinary research program at the Berlin-based Forum Transregionale Studien. EUME seeks to rethink key concepts and premises that link and divide Europe and the Middle East. Within the framework of five research fields in the disciplines of Literature, Political Philosophy, Urban History, Philology-cum-Late Antiquity, and Islamic Studies, the program attempts to recollect the legacies of Europe in the Middle East and of the Middle East in Europe in an inclusive way that aims to do justice to their entanglements. more...

Berliner Seminar Winter Term 2017/18

Under this winter term's umbrella theme »Archeology of the Present«, our fellows and other guest researchers will discuss their research projects and ideas on the negotiation of universal norms and rights between Europe and the Middle East, as well as their views on the fragmentation of history and present.

From October 24-27, the International Conference: »Jews in Muslim Majority Countries - History and Prospects« will take place at the W. Michael Blumenthal Academy of the Jewish Museum Berlin. The event is organized by the Jewish Museum Berlin and the research network Re-Configurations. ERC Starting Grant awarded to EUME Fellow Refqa Abu-Remaileh

Congratulations to Refqa Abu-Remaileh (EUME Fellow 2012/13, 2014-18) who received an ERC Starting Grant. The funding of the European Research Council (ERC) for early career researchers enables her to work on her research project »Country of Words: Reading and Reception of Palestinian Literature from 1948 to the Present« at Freie Universität Berlin.

Research with scholars at risk

The Forum Transregionale Studien was enabled by the Philipp Schwartz Initiative to award a stipend to a scholar at risk. Since 2011 the Forum has supported scholars that have fled or were at risk in their home countries with more than ten postdoctoral scholarships in the framework of its program Europe in the Middle East—The Middle East in Europe (EUME).
