Joseph R. Farag

Write of Return: The Palestinian Short Story in Exile

Joseph R. Farag’s research interests revolve around the intersection of politics, history, and cultural production in the Arab world, with a particular focus on Palestinian literature. He recently completed his PhD at Queen Mary, University of London, where his dissertation examined trends and developments in the exilic Palestinian short story from 1948-1992, exploring the overlapping themes of aesthetics, gender and sexuality, and literary modes of resistance. Farag holds Master’s degrees in Near and Middle Eastern Studies from SOAS, University of London and in Cultural Analysis and Social Theory from Wilfrid Laurier University in Ontario, Canada, where he also earned joint undergraduate degrees in Political Science and Global Studies. Reflecting his interdisciplinary background, Farag’s research not only draws on theoretical frameworks and methodologies from a variety of academic fields, but also contributes and intervenes across disciplinary boundaries. Outside academia, Farag has also worked as a consultant on reform and development projects in a number of Arab countries and has served as the Egypt and North Africa editor for the online magazine, Muftah.org.
